Switch from Google Authenticator to Tokn

Google Authenticator can export all of your accounts as QR codes, and Tokn scans those directly. The whole move takes about a minute - and afterwards your codes live in an encrypted vault on your device instead of in your Google account.

How to switch, step by step

  1. 1

    Export your accounts

In Google Authenticator, open the menu, choose Transfer accounts, then Export accounts, and select what to move. The app shows one or more QR codes.

  2. 2

    Install Tokn

Get Tokn from Google Play or F-Droid. There is no account to create - set a vault password or fingerprint unlock and you are ready.

  3. 3

    Scan the export QR codes

In Tokn, open Import, choose Google Authenticator, and scan each QR code. All selected accounts are added at once.

  4. 4

    Verify and clean up

Compare a few codes between the apps, create an encrypted Tokn backup, then remove the accounts from Google Authenticator.

FAQ

Common questions

How do I export from Google Authenticator?

Open the menu, tap Transfer accounts, then Export accounts, and select the accounts. Google Authenticator renders QR codes that other apps - including Tokn - can scan.

Will my logins still work after switching?

Yes. The export carries the same secrets, so Tokn generates exactly the same codes. Nothing changes on the services' side and you don't need to touch their settings.

Do I need a Google account for Tokn?

No. Tokn has no account at all and runs without Google Play Services - it is published on F-Droid as well as Google Play.
