Switch from Aegis to Tokn

Aegis and Tokn share the same philosophy: open source, offline, encrypted. That makes switching painless - Tokn reads Aegis backup files directly, including encrypted ones. You export once, import once, and you are done.

How to switch, step by step

  1. 1

    Export your Aegis vault

In Aegis, open Settings, then Import & export, and choose Export. Keep encryption enabled and save the backup file to your device.

  2. 2

    Install Tokn

Get Tokn from Google Play or F-Droid. There is no account to create - set a vault password or fingerprint unlock and you are ready.

  3. 3

    Import the backup in Tokn

In Tokn, open Import, choose Aegis, pick the backup file, and enter your Aegis password. All tokens come across in one pass.

  4. 4

    Verify and clean up

Check that a few codes match between both apps, create a fresh encrypted Tokn backup, then wipe the Aegis vault and delete the exported file.

FAQ

Common questions

Can Tokn import encrypted Aegis backups?

Yes. Tokn reads Aegis backup files directly, including encrypted ones. You enter the password you set in Aegis during the import and everything is decrypted on your device.

Do my icons and groups come along?

Your tokens import in one pass, and Tokn understands Aegis-style icon packs. Afterwards you can sort accounts into groups - more than one per account if you like.

Why switch from Aegis at all?

Both are excellent open-source authenticators. Tokn adds encrypted local-network sync for moving to a new phone - over Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct or an animated QR code - plus Material You theming. See the full comparison for details.
