Where Tokn pulls ahead

Tokn adds device-to-device sync over local Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, or an animated QR code, so a new phone does not mean shuffling backup files. It also leans fully into Material You with dynamic color across the app. And Tokn reads Stratum backups directly, so trying it out takes a couple of minutes.

Where Stratum is better

Stratum has a Wear OS companion app, so your codes can live on your watch, and it has been around longer. If a watch app matters to you, Stratum is the one to keep.

Bottom line

Two apps with the same basic stance on privacy. Pick Stratum for Wear OS, pick Tokn for local sync and Material You. Either way your codes stay offline.

FAQ

Common questions

Can Tokn import my Stratum backup?

Yes. Export a backup in Stratum, open the import screen in Tokn, and pick the file. Accounts and their settings come across.

Does Tokn support Wear OS?

Not yet. Stratum is ahead there with its watch companion app. Tokn focuses on the phone, with an encrypted vault and local device-to-device sync.

Do both apps work fully offline?

Yes. Both generate TOTP and HOTP codes on the device with no account and no server. Tokn's optional internet permission is only for fetching service icons, and it is off by default.

Is Tokn a good Stratum alternative?

Yes. Both are free, open source, and offline. Tokn adds local device-to-device sync and full Material You theming, and it imports Stratum backups directly. If you rely on the Wear OS companion app, keep Stratum.
